You’re barking up the wrong tree here. Canada can easily afford to pay for this drug, it is just that they don’t want to pay the astronomically high price that Vertex wants for their magic blue pills. But as opposed to taking the time to negotiate a better price for it, with the lives of CF patients in the balance they should have bought a year of Kalydeco at the going rate, and without a pricing agreement in place. This would have given them the breathing room to negotiate a better deal with Vertex for the long term without punishing the very people that stand to benefit from Kalydeco, by denying them immediate access to it. To have done so is absolutely unconscionable!

Hello, I’m writing because my wife was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was a baby. She’s outlived predicted age limits time after time, and now at age 35 the dis-ease is really becoming more of a challenge in our lives.

We found out through a recent hospital visit that she has the G551D mutation. I hope for the future of my wife and I that funding becomes available very soon.

The term “negotiation” is out of place here. I think you should have said that the Canadian negotiators really have both hands tied behind their backs given the “take it or leave” stance by Vertex who are no doubt heedful of the fact that they really can’t afford (a relative term) to give Canada much of a break beyond what they have in place in terms of costing agreements with the countries that are already paying for Kalydeco. If they did, surely that news would get out one day, and those countries would come back to Vertex for a similar deal and maybe even a refund.
